the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), in cooperation with the
Community Media Center in Gaza City, concluded a training course in women’s
rights. The 10-hour training course was
held in the head office of the Training and Management Institute (TAMI) in Gaza
City in the period 23 – 24 June 2013. 21
female participants from women and student unions attended the course.
The course focused on a number of international
human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; the
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women; Universal Declaration
on the Elimination of Violence against Women; and women’s rights and gender
under international conventions.
The training was conducted by a number of
specialized trainers from PCHR: Majda Shihada, a researcher in PCHR’s Women’s
Rights Unit; Bassam al-Aqra’, Director of PCHR’s Training Unit; and Khalil
Shahin, Director of PCHR’s Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Unit.
Mr. Bassam al-Aqra’ stated in his concluding
speech that this course is part of PCHR’s long-term efforts to promote human
rights in Palestinian society in cooperation with community-based
organizations. He added that the course programme had been designed based on
the needs of the target group. He also
pointed out that trainees should transfer what they learnt to the social and
professional departments around them. Al-Aqra’ further called upon trainees to
avail of the services provided by PCHR, stressing that its doors are open to
everyone.
The participants highly appreciated PCHR’s
efforts to spread the culture of human rights in the Palestinian society. They
said that the course contributed to raising the participants’ awareness of the
concepts of human rights in general and women’s rights in particular as they
work in the same field.
All participants received certificates at the
conclusion of the course.
