PCHR Commemorates Palestinian Prisoners’ Day
Today, 17 April 2004, PCHR commemorates Palestinian Prisoners’ Day through a number of activities, in high appreciation to the heroism of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, detained for defending Palestinian human rights and legitimate cause.
While Israeli occupying forces have continued its aggressive campaign against Palestinian civilians in general, Palestinian prisoners have been particularly subject to human rights violations. Approximately 7600 Palestinian prisoners, including 362 children and 82 women, are currently detained in Israeli prisons and detention centers. These prisoners are regularly subject to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, including poor detention conditions, denial of access to lawyers, denial of family visitation, deprivation of health care and other measures of administrative detention.
In addition to the regular legal assistance that it provides to these prisoners and their families, PCHR is carrying out a number of activities to commemorate Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, as part of its concern for the conditions of Palestinian prisoners. Since Thursday, 15 April 2004, a number of Palestinian plastic artists have been working on a wall painting, 18 meters wide and 180 centimeters high outside PCHR’s main offices in Gaza City, done in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Culture. This painting aims to display the suffering of Palestinian prisoners and their families’ hope for their release. The painting has been completed today.
In addition, PCHR is publishing a special report on the conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails titled, “Palestinian Prisoners in Israeli Jails.” In this report, PCHR highlights the dire living conditions of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, and gives updated statistics about Palestinian prisoners. The report details the suffering of Palestinian civilians through affidavits collated from lawyers and prisoners’ families.
PCHR has also created a poster that illustrates the suffering of the Palestinian people in general and prisoners held in Israeli jails in particular. Those interested in obtaining the report or the poster can contact PCHR. The report is also available on PCHR’s web page: www.pchrgaza.org.
