PCHR Palestinian Centre for Human Rights PRESS RELEASE |
Ref: 147/2005
Date: 22 November 2005
PCHR Becomes an Organizational Member of ILAC
Today, Mr. Raji Sourani, Director of PCHR, has received a letter from Mr. Christian Ahlond, Executive Director of International Legal Consortium (ILAC), informing him that the ILAC council decided in its meeting on 6 October 2005 to accept the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) as an organizational member of the Consortium. Mr. Ahlond has further stated that “ILAC is proud to be able to include your organization among its members and wishes to express its admiration for your tireless work to respect and promote the rule of law under the most difficult circumstances.”
The Stockholm-based ILAC is one of the most important international legal bodies. It includes more than 30 members of distinguished legal organizations throughout the world, including American Bar Association; Arab Lawyers Union; Bar Council of England and Wales; Canadian Bar Association; Council of Bars and Law Societies of the European Union; Norwegian Bar Association; Bar Association of India; and Swedish Bar Association.
PCHR is pleased to be included as a member of a pioneer international legal organization, especially as this inclusion coincides with the 10th anniversary of the establishment of PCHR. ILAC has been the sixth international and regional organization to include PCHR as a member since its establishment in 1995. PCHR is a member of the International Commission of Jurists – Geneva; the International Federation for Human Rights – Paris; the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network – Copenhagen; the International Union of Democratic Lawyers – Paris; and the Arab Organization for Human Rights – Cairo. It has also a consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. PCHR’s membership in these international and regional bodies is an indicator of its activeness and credibility in serving Palestinian human rights issues. Since its establishment, PCHR has been awarded three international prizes for its achievements in the area of human rights: the France Republic Human Rights Award (1996); the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Outstanding Achievements in the Area of Human Rights (2002); and International Service Human Rights Award (2003).
As it has become a member of ILAC and on the 10th anniversary of its establishment, PCHR undertakes to continue its struggle to defend Palestinian human rights, and the issue of human rights in general.
