In
presence of Mr. Salamah Bseiso, Vice Chairman of the Palestine Bar Association (PBA)
and Assistant Secretary General of the Arab Lawyers Union, and Mr. Jaber
Wishah, Deputy Director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), on
Sunday, 05 April 2015, PCHR’s Training unit and the PBA concluded a training
course in the field of human rights and application of justice for young
lawyers.
The
20-hour training course was held in Laterna Restaurant in Gaza City in the
period 30 March – 05 April 2015. Thirty-two
lawyers attended the course.
In
his concluding speech, Mr. Salamah Bseiso highlighted the strong relationship
between PCHR and the PBA and emphasized that this relation would be maintained to
serve lawyers, especially young ones.
Bseiso also appreciated the distinct role of PCHR in disseminating the
culture of human rights and the rule of law among young lawyers. Bseiso stressed the outstanding role done by
PCHR in defending Palestinian human rights and making efforts to prosecute
Israeli war criminals at the international level. In the end of his speech, he congratulated
the lawyers for participating in this course.
In
the same context, Mr. Jaber Wishah emphasized the strong relationship between
lawyers and human rights because they both share the goal of raising victims’
voice and helping them have their rights.
Wishah added that the relationship between PCHR and PBA is not seasonal,
but it is an ongoing, stable and long-standing relation and training lawyers in
the field of human rights is part of this relation. At the end of his speech, Wishah encouraged
the lawyers not to hesitate to refer to PCHR for everything they need,
especially as PCHR has a rich library in the field of law and human rights.
Basam
al-Aqraa’, Director of PCHR’s training Unit, stated that this course is part of
a project funded by the European Union entitled “Human Rights and Freedom
of Access to Information”. He added
that the course program included a number of topics such as introduction to
human rights, International Bill of Human Rights, the independence of the
judiciary and the rule of law, lawyers’ role in protection and promotion of human rights, the
International Criminal Law, the International Criminal Court, and mechanisms of
monitoring and documenting human rights violations.
Lawyer Reem Kuheil, who
participated in the course, said that the course contributed to raising the participants”
awareness of human rights concepts, International Criminal Law and
International Criminal Court. Lawyer
Hisham Rashed, who participated as well in the course, emphasized that the
course was characterized by its diverse topics and rich information. He also appreciated the course and praised
the dedication of the trainers and the use of diverse interactive training
methods. He added that active
participation and discussion during the training sessions enriched the course.
A
team of specialized trainers supervised the training sessions. The team
included Mr. Salamah Bseiso, Vice Chairman of PBA; Mr. Jaber Wishah, Deputy
Director of PCHR; Mr. Basam al-Aqraa’, Director of PCHR’s Training Unit; Mr.
Ramzi al-Najjar from Prisoners’ Supporters Society; Ms. Ahlam al-Aqraa’ and Mr.
Mohammed ‘Atallah, Lawyers in PCHR’s Legal Unit; and Mr. Yasser ‘Abdel Ghafour,
a fieldworker at PCHR. It should be
mentioned that four of the trainers participated in training courses for human
rights trainers that were organized by PCHR during the last period.
All participants received certificates at the end of the
day.
