Ongoing Genocide in Gaza: Israeli Occupation Forces Target Displaced People’s Tents and Shelters and Exterminate Entire Families

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) condemns in the strongest terms the Israeli Occupation Forces’ (IOF) ongoing military aggression on the Gaza Strip, including the deliberate targeting of temporary shelters and displaced people’s tents, mass killings, and the extermination of entire families, as part of their crime of genocide ongoing for 19 months.

According to our field researchers’ documentation, at approximately 02:00 on Monday, 12 May 2025, Israeli warplanes targeted Fatima Bint Asad Public Preparatory School in Jabalia al-Balad area, north of Gaza Strip as it shelters tens of displaced families. As a result, 15 people, including 8 children and 2 women, were killed, while 20 others, including 9 children and 3 women, were injured after two classrooms on the 3rd floor of the school’s western building, where the victims had sought refuge, were destroyed. About 10 minutes later, Israeli warplanes targeted Jabalia Elementary School for Girls, which is adjacent to Fatima Bint Asad School on the eastern side, after the IOF had called displaced people inside the school and ordered them to evacuate. The airstrike destroyed large parts of the school, while many displaced people lost most of their belongings and the scarce food they had, amid the spread of famine in the Gaza Strip due to Israel’s closure of Gaza’s crossings for 72 consecutive days.

At around 01:20 on Saturday, 10 May 2025, Israeli warplanes targeted a tent for displaced people in al-Zaytoun neighborhood, east of Gaza City. As a result, an entire family of 5 was erased. They were identified as: Saqer Ahmed Foad Tulaib (31), his wife Hend Omar Aabu al-Kas (27), and their children Ahmed (9), Hamza (7), and ‘Abed al-‘Aziz (4).

At around 01:40 on Friday, 09 May 2025, an Israeli helicopter targeted Hamdan family house located east of al-‘Ashrin Street in al-Nusirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. As a result, Safaa Husam Fayiz Hamdan (29) and her 10-month-old baby, ‘Amro Rashad Rebhi Abu Hayiah, were killed, while five others were seriously injured, including the father and his two children.

At approximately 19:40 on Friday, 09 May 2025, Israeli warplanes targeted the previously destroyed UNRWA’s Social Services Building in Jabalia refugee camp, north of the Gaza Strip, noting that the building had been previously destroyed. As a result, two people were killed and others were injured, while several remain trapped under the rubble, as ambulance and civil defense crews have been unable to retrieve them. The airstrike also caused extensive damage to UNRWA’s food supply warehouses, which are adjacent to the targeted building on the northern side.

It is worth noting that the Social Services Building was destroyed during the IOF’s ground invasion into Jabalia refugee camp in October 2024, with only some parts remaining, which were targeted once again. The targeted building is also adjacent to the Jabalia Refugee Camp’s Health Center, operated by UNRWA, on the southern side. The health center shelters dozens of displaced families, which further increased the number of casualties.

At approximately 17:00 on Thursday, 08 May 2025, Israeli warplanes targeted a group of people behind al-Amal Hotel in western Gaza City. The airstrike killed 4 people, from Abu Hasira family, including two brothers and a child who succumbed to his injury two days later.

At around 18:20 on Thursday, 08 May 2025, Israeli warplanes launched an airstrike on a warehouse sheltering displaced people on the ground floor of Qadouhah building in al-Nusirat refugee camp. As a result, 3 people, including 2 children, were killed, and 15 others were injured.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH), the death toll since the resumption of the Israeli military aggression on 18 March 2025 has risen to 2,749, with 7,607 injured. This brings the total death toll since 7 October 2023 to 52,862, with 119,648 injured, while thousands of bodies remain trapped under the rubble, unable to be retrieved[1].

This comes at a time the starvation crisis is escalating as Israel continues to close all Gaza’s crossings and block entry of humanitarian aid, food and medical supplies since 02 March 2025.  As a result, hunger and malnutrition have hit high levels, especially among children, women and patients.

PCHR emphasizes that silence towards these crimes is explicit complicity. The international community must rise to its responsibilities not merely under law, but towards the very essence of humanity. Immediate international action is urgently needed to end the systematic violations and crimes committed by IOF against the Palestinian people.

PCHR calls for immediate and serious measures to stop the ongoing crime of genocide and hold the Israeli perpetrators of these crimes accountable before international courts.  PCHR also urges the State Parties to the Genocide Convention to fulfil their legal and moral obligations and take urgent action to protect the Palestinian civilians from the mass killings and serious human rights violations.
