Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Weekly Update 10 – 16 August 2023)

Violation of Right to Life and Bodily Integrity

Between 10 August and 16 August 2023, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) conducted a series of attacks across the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), resulting in significant casualties and damage. The details are as follows:

  1. Casualties and Injuries:
  • 10 August 2023: Ameer Ahmad Khalifa (24) was killed in Nablus after IOF fired at him during an incursion into Zuta village. Khalifa was shot twice, once in the head and once in the back.
  • 11 August 2023: Mahmoud Jihad ‘Abed Jarad (24) was killed by IOF in Tulkarm. Jarad was unarmed and was shot in the chest during an IOF incursion. Eight others were wounded.
  • 15 August 2023: Qusay ‘Omar Suleiman Al-Walaji (16) and Mohammad Nujoom (25), a member of Palestinian armed groups, were killed during an IOF incursion into ‘Aqbat Jaber refugee camp south of Jericho. Injuries:
  • On 11 August, four Palestinians were wounded by rubber bullets during the suppression of a peaceful protest in Kafr Qaddum against settlements.
  • On 12 August, two Palestinians, including a child, were injured similarly during another protest in Kafr Qaddum.
  • On 15 August, IOF shot at a vehicle near Hawara checkpoint in Nablus, wounding the driver and arresting him. Three Palestinians were injured, with one in serious condition, during an IOF incursion into Nablus.
  • On 12 August, two fishermen, including a child, were injured by rubber-coated bullets from IOF stationed off the northern Gaza Strip. They were arrested but later released. Overall Statistics for 2023:
  • 212 Palestinians killed, including 105 civilians (38 children, 6 women, and a person with a disability), and members of Palestinian armed groups.
  • 1035 Palestinians injured, including 152 children, 30 women, and 16 journalists.
  1. Land Razing, Demolitions, and Settlement Expansion:
  • 10 August 2023: Tamer Al-Bakri was forced to self-demolish part of his house in Beit Hanina, East Jerusalem. The Israeli Court also ordered Mrs. Noura Sub Laban to pay compensation for her eviction.
  • 14 August 2023: Demolition notices were distributed to commercial and industrial facilities in Wadi al-Joz, East Jerusalem. Israeli settlers and municipality employees began seizing land in Silwan for a parking lot.
  • 15 August 2023: IOF razed 40 forest trees and confiscated items from a park in Qarawat Bani Hassan village and handed a cease-construction notice to a house in al-Bowaib village.
  • 16 August 2023: IOF seized a bulldozer from Qarawat Bani Hassan village and handed more cease-construction notices. Impact:
  • Since the beginning of 2023, 136 families have been made homeless, totaling 796 persons, including 174 women and 352 children. 137 houses have been demolished, along with 99 other civilian objects.
  1. Settler Attacks and Retaliatory Acts:
  • 10 August 2023: Settlers attacked a Palestinian in southern Bani Na’im village in Hebron and tried to destroy documents proving land ownership.
  • 16 August 2023: Settlers demolished two agricultural rooms in eastern Yatta, Hebron. Overall Impact:
  • Settlers have conducted at least 296 attacks against Palestinians and their property this year, resulting in seven deaths, numerous injuries, and extensive property damage.
  1. Israeli Closure and Restrictions:
  • The Gaza Strip remains under a 17-year closure.
  • In the West Bank, IOF continues to impose restrictions on movement with 110 permanent checkpoints and 131 temporary military checkpoints.
  • 10 August 2023: IOF blocked dirt roads in Hebron and held a festival in Jerusalem that restricted local traffic.
  • 14 August 2023: IOF seized a vehicle belonging to a person with a disability in East Jerusalem. Overall Statistics:
  • IOF has established 3,823 temporary military checkpoints and detained numerous Palestinians at these locations.

These actions reflect a continued pattern of violations of international law and human rights, contributing to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
