On
Thursday, 19 March 2015, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR)
organized a workshop on democracy and regimes in coordination with PalThink
organization in the PalThink’s head office. Fourteen young men and women
attended the workshop.

The
workshop discussed several topics, including the importance and concept of
democracy and its indicators and the availability of these indicators in the
Palestinian society.  The workshop
stressed that democracy is not just an electoral process, but the concept is
more comprehensive, otherwise the majority would become a dictatorship.  The attendants showed remarkable interaction
with the workshop’s topics through a constructive debate.

In
the same context, on Monday, 16 March 2015, PCHR organized another workshop in
coordination with Rowad al-Amal Youth Team on the abolishment of death penalty
in PCHR’s head office in Gaza.  The
workshop that was attended by 30 young men and women addressed the serious
consequences of applying extra-judicial executions and the importance of
fighting this phenomenon.  The workshop
also addressed PCHR’s position supported with legal and subjective reasons against
the application of the death penalty.

These
workshops were facilitated by Mohammed Abu Hashem, a legal researcher at PCHR, in
the context of PCHR’s efforts to enhance the culture of democracy, abolish the
death penalty and put an end to extra-judicial executions.

It
should be mentioned that the Democratic Development Unit of PCHR has organized
dozens of workshops on different topics related to democracy, principles of
good governance and the death penalty in order to raise awareness among all
segments of Palestinian society about the mechanisms and importance of
democracy and its dynamic link with their daily life.
