Press Release
For eight consecutive days:
The Israeli Occupation Forces continue their aggression against Palestinian civilians
Ref: 118/2000
Date: October 6, 2000
Time: 14:30 GMT
This afternoon, bloody clashes broke up throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The Israeli Occupation Forces responded to demonstrations with fire shooting, which resulted in killing and injuring more Palestinian civilians. At about 11:00 GMT, Loai Abdullah Al-Moqayad, 19 years old from Jabalya, and Marwan Abdel Razeq Shamallakh, 23 years old from Gaza, were shot dead by the Israeli Occupation Forces at Al-Shuhada’ Junction (Netzarim Junction) in the Gaza Strip. Al-Moqayad received a bullet in the head, and Shamallakh received a bullet in the chest. In Nablus, Dhia’ Abdel Rahman Essa, 19 years old from Salem village, died due to a bullet in his chest by the Israeli Occupation Forces. In addition, Eyad Abdel Halim Shtaiwi, 23 years old from Salem village too, was shot dead in his back. In Tulkarm, Mohammed Khaled Tammam, 21 years old, was shot dead in the chest. In the old city of Jerusalem, the Israeli Occupation Forces shot at Palestinian demonstrators, and PCHR was informed that a child, Mohammed Joudeh, 12 years old, was shot dead in the head.
This morning, Ziad Baraka, 19 years old from Deir El-Balah, was severely injured at the area of Netzarim Settlement, when a shell, that remained after the bombing by Israeli helicopters, blasted. PCHR’s field officers informed that the shell exploded as soon as Ziad Baraka touched it. As a result, he was severely injured in both his face and arms, in addition to another person who was injured lightly. Sources at Shifa’ Hospital stated that Ziad Baraka’s forearm was cut and lost his eyes. At Netzarim area too, Shadi El-Sayes, 19 years old from Gaza was severely injured in his neck. Similarly, Rafah and Khan Younis cities witnessed escalation of aggression by the Israeli Occupation Forces, responding to demonstrators with fire and tear gas.
The number of the Palestinians who were killed as a result of the Israeli Occupation Forces’ aggression against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Palestinian cities and villages inside the Green Line for eight consecutive day has increased to 70. Moreover, more than 2000 Palestinians were injured, some of them are in critical conditions.
Since Thursday October 5, 2000, the Israeli Occupation Forces imposed complete closure on the Occupied Palestinian territory. This closure is expected to last for several days. In the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Occupation Forces closed crossings into Israel, and completely prevented movement of persons and trade between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Palestinians were also prevented from entering Jerusalem.
PCHR reiterates its condemnation of the Israeli Occupation Forces’ practices and aggressions against Palestinian citizens. PCHR also warns more deterioration of the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, if the international community does not take some immediate actions to halt the Israeli aggressions and the killings of Palestinian citizens. PCHR further requests a neutral and independent international committee to investigate the Israeli practices.
