On Thursday, 21 April 2016, a civilian was shot dead in a personal dispute in al-Zahra Housing Compound in the central Gaza Strip. This incident is part of the phenomenon of proliferation of weapons and attack on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).
According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 13:00 on Thursday, 21 April 2016, a dispute erupted between Hammad Deeb Dughmosh (35) and two other young men on a plot of land in al-Zahra Compound. The dispute developed into the use of firearms. As a result, Dughmosh was hit with a live bullet to the chest and then taken to al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City, where he was pronounced dead.
PCHR learnt that the Palestinian police arrived at the scene and opened an investigation. Sources in Abu ‘Ereiban police station in al-Nussairat said that the suspect was arrested; his weapon was seized and the case was referred to the Deir al-Balah Prosecution.
PCHR condemns the murder of Hammad Dughmosh and is strongly concerned over the continued use of firearms resulting in killings. PCHR also calls upon the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to put an end to the phenomenon of proliferation of weapons and attack on the rule of law and to maintain the safety and security of civilians.
