The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) organized two lectures to raise awareness on the rights of persons with disabilities and UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The two lectures held at Aisha Association for Woman and Child Protection in Gaza City targeted 25 women with disabilities that are involved in an initiative implemented by Aisha to protect women with disabilities and empower them economically.
The first lecture held on Tuesday, 24 November 2015, was attended by 25 women with disabilities. The second lecture was held on Thursday morning, 26 November 2015, where 23 women with disabilities attended.
During the two lectures, Mr. Khalil Shaheen, Director of PCHR’s Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Unit, made a presentation on Law No. 4 of 1999 on the rights of persons with disabilities, and the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, including their civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights. Mr. Shaheen also discussed the importance of the Convention and international obligations arising from the accession of the State of Palestine to the abovementioned Convention in April 2014. He also talked about the Convention based on the comprehensive human rights perspective instead of dealing with persons with disabilities from a medical or charitable perspective.
It is worth noting that the two lectures were organized as part of the two-year “Promoting Human Rights and Freedom of Access to Information in the Gaza Strip” project funded by the EU.
