On
Sunday evening, 01 June 2014, ‘Abdel ‘Aziz Hatim Qashlan (10), from
al-Nussairat refugee camp, was killed by a bullet while he was playing near a
training site belonging to an armed group. 
In a separate incident, Tawfiq Yousif al-‘Arja (20) was wounded by a
bullet when he was in his house in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah. These
incidents are part of the phenomenon of misuse of weapons and breaches of the
rule of law prevailing in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

 

According
to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR),
at approximately 18:40 on Sunday, 01 June 2014, ‘Abdel ‘Aziz Hatim Qashlan (10),
from al-Nussairat refugee camp, was killed by a bullet to the chest and was
then transferred to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.  According to eyewitnesses, Qashlan was
playing with his friends near Gaza Valley near the camp, around 70 meters away
from the training site of a Palestinian armed group, while training was taking
place in the site, during which there were shootings and explosions.

 

In
a separate incident, on Saturday, 31 May 2014, Tawfiq Yousif al-‘Arja (20) was
wounded by a bullet to his left foot while he was sleeping in his house in
al-Salam neighborhood, south of Rafah.  Al-‘Arja
was taken to Abu Yousif al-Najjar Hospital in the city where his wound was
described as moderate.  The Palestinian
police said that an unknown person fired a bullet at al-‘Arja who was inside in
his house.

 

PCHR
condemns these incidents, which are part of the state of proliferation of
weapons and assaults on the rule of law in the oPt.  PCHR calls upon the Palestinian Authority to
seriously investigate these incidents and take necessary measures to safeguard
the security and safety of civilians.
