PCHR Receives an FIDH Inquiry Mission
Upon an invitation by PCHR, on Sunday evening, 6 June 2004, an inquiry mission from the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) arrived in Gaza to investigate violations of human rights perpetrated by Israeli occupying forces during their recent offensive on Rafah. The mission includes Secretary General of FIDH Oliver Discoter, and Lawrence Weirts. Both are experts in international law and have long experience in international justice.
PCHR Board of Administration received the mission in PCHR’s office in Gaza City and briefed them on the latest developments regarding the Israeli military offensive against Rafah and its civilian population. Members of the mission were also provided with some reports and documents on Israeli violations of human rights during that offensive.
On Monday morning, 7 June 2004, the mission, accompanied by Deputy Director of PCHR Jaber Weshah and a number of PCHR field workers and lawyers visited Rafah to see the outcome of the Israeli offensive on the town.
The mission’s visit will continue until 11 June 2004. During the visit, the mission will have field tours in Rafah and will meet with victims and their families.
Following this visit, the mission will report on their findings on the events in Rafah from the perspectives of international law and humanitarian law.
