Child Accidently Shot Dead by Relative in Balata Camp, East of Nablus

Field update

On 31 December 2018, a 5-year old child was accidently shot dead in the chest shot by his relative in Balata Camp, east of Nablus. This is part of state of the pro-proliferation of weapons and the assault of the rule of law in the Occupied Territory.

According to PCHR’s investigation, approximately at 20:50 on Monday, 31 December 2018, Laith Bassam Abu Shallal (5) arrived at the National Hospital in Nablus wounded with a bullet to the chest after the bullet mistakenly unleashed from the firearm of his relative from (H) family. This happened while Laith was playing in front of his house near Martyr’s Memorial in al-Wad area, east of Nablus. The relative from (H) family then took the child to the National Hospital, where he shortly died. The Palestinian police arrived and opened an investigation. After that, (H) turned himself in to the Palestinian Intelligence Service.

PCHR notes with concern the increasing number of causalities due to the use and mishandling of weapons and calls upon the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to protect the civilians from the danger of weapons.
