On Sunday, a civilian was killed and 3 others, including a child, were wounded due to using fireworks and opening fire into the air throughout the Gaza Strip, while celebrating Tawjihi exams results. This is considered part of the state of proliferation of weapons and assault on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).
According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), in Gaza City, Ramiz Jaal Dawoud al-Gharabli (17), from al-Shuja’iyia neighborhood, east of Gaza City, died after being shot with a live bullet to the head while celebrating Tawjihi exams results of 2018 in al-Shuja’iyia neighborhood. Ayman al-Batniji, Spokesperson of the Palestinian Police in Gaza, said to PCHR’s fieldworker that Ramiz mistakenly shot himself. Initial investigations indicate that he held the firearm incorrectly, after which a live bullet came out of wounding and killing him immediately.
In the central Gaza Strip, ‘Asmaa Reziq al-Louh (22), from al-Nusirat Camp, was hit with a live bullet to the right foot and doctors classified her wounds as moderate. Moreover, Ayman ‘Amer al-Jadiliy (23), from al-Burij Camp, was hit with a live bullet to the abdomen. Both of them were taken to al-Aqsa Hospital in Dir al-Balah to receive medical treatment.
In the northern Gaza Strip, Saleh ‘Abdul Qader Abu Haloub (2), from Beit Lahia, was hit with a live bullet to the hand by armed men, who opened fire into the air while celebrating Tawjihi exams results. Salah was wounded while present in front of his house.
It should be noted that pervious years have witnessed similar regrettable incidents, including deaths and injuries among civilians due to opening fire or using fireworks while celebrating Tawjihi exams results. The regrettable incidents took place despite warnings by police not to use this kinds of weapons while celebrating Tawjihi exams results.
PCHR deeply condemns the killing of al-Gharabli and the wounding of 3 others due to using firearm’s in occasions and celebrations which is part of the state of proliferation of weapons, security chaos and assault on the rule of law in the oPt. PCHR calls upon the official parties to take all necessary measures to end these acts and to guarantee they won’t happen again.
