Press Release Death of three Children in a fridge which used to contain food, in RafahCentral Market. Ref: 66/2000Date: 18 May 2000 On 17 May 2000 the police from Rafah was deployed looking for three children Mahmoud Yasser Sai’d Marzouq, five years old, his sister Asmaa, three and half years old, and their cousin Sai’d Isaam Sai’d Rizq, four years old, who went missing. The uncle of the three children, Saie’d Rizq, confirmed that his nephews went missing that day.The search continued throughout the night. Finally, on 18 May 2000, the bodies of the three children were found in Rafah’s central market, locked up in a fridge which used to contain food but had been disused for three months. The fridge was owned by a meat seller, located outside his shop which had closed down three months ago. Immediately the police arrived to the place, and started their investigation on the causes of the incident. The bodies were subsequently transferred to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis for autopsy. PCHR expressed its deep concern over this tragic incident that led to the death of three children. At the same time PCHR calls the Governorates of Rafah and the Municipal Council to immediately to take all the necessary measures to guarantee that similar incidents will not occur again.
