On Monday, 28 January 2013, the Training
Unit of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) concluded a training
course in the field of mechanisms of justice and judicial remedy in cooperation
with the Fishermen Syndicate in the Gaza Strip. 
The 12-hour training course was held at Fishermen Syndicate’s office in
Gaza seaport from 27-28 January 2013.  43
Fishermen, who are also members of the syndicate, attended the course.

The program of the course included a
number of titles, including the International Bill of Human Rights; challenges
facing fishermen in their access to justice; the right to adequate housing,
land and property under the international human rights law and international humanitarian
law; Palestinian land law and the reasons for and ways of proving ownership; and
judicial remedy for victims of violations of housing, land and property rights.  This course is part of a 9-month project implemented
by PCHR in cooperation with the Norwegian Refugee Council entitled “Improving
Access to Justice.”

A team of specialized trainers supervised
the training sessions.  The team included
Mr. Khalil Shahin, the project coordinator and Director of PCHR’s Economic,
Social and Cultural Unit; Mr. Fadel al-Mzaini, a researcher at the same unit;
Ahlam al-Aqra’, a lawyer at PCHR’s Legal Aid Unit; and Fatimah al-Sharif, a
lawyer at the Norwegian Refugee Council.

At the conclusion of the course, participants
highly appreciated PCHR’s efforts to promote the culture of human rights in the
Palestinian society.  They also
emphasized that this course contributed to raise their awareness of the right
to housing, land, and property and pointed that it addressed distinguished
subjects.  Participants also requested
more such training courses to be organized in order to develop the capacity of
fishermen in the field of access to justice. 
All participants received certificates at the conclusion of the
course.
