PCHR Welcomes the Spanish Court’s Decision Acquitting Bahjat al-khaldi of his Charges

Ref: 55/2012

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) welcomes the decision by Spanish Court no.1 to release a Palestinian man, Bahjat al-Khaldi. This Court, which is located in Alcobendas City, issued the decision yesterday, 11 June 2012, after al-Khladi had been detained there for three consecutive years.

Al-Khaldi was arrested by the Spanish authorities on 12 June 2009 when he was accused of murdering two people, a Colombian and a Moroccan.  Accordingly, he was kept under provisional detention for the last three years.

PCHR started following up on al-Khaldi’s file directly after his detention.  He was represented by PCHR in his court hearings through a Spanish lawyer, Gonzalo Boye.  PCHR is now following up on the legal procedures needed to guarantee the release of al-Khaldi.

It should be noted that al-Khaldi is a Palestinian man from al-Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, who has been living in Spain for years.
