Gaza Centre for the Freedom of Media Organizes Ceremony to Honor Lawyer Raji Sourani for Winning “Alternative Noble Prize”

During a ceremony, the Gaza Centre for the
Freedom of Media honored Lawyer Raji Sourani, Director of the Palestinian
Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), for winning the “Alternative Noble Prize” and
handed him a souvenir emblem and a gold medal in appreciation for his role.

 

On Thursday, 06 February 2014, the ceremony was
held as part of a conference organized by the Gaza Centre for the Freedom of
Media- Doha Centre for the Freedom of Media. The event was held in the French
Cultural Centre in Gaza City to launch the second annual report on the violations
of the right to freedom of media in Palestine. 
Around 200 people, Members of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC),
journalists, columnists, academics, human rights activists and press and media
students attended the conference.

 

Lawyer Sourani delivered a speech, during which
he emphasized the importance of the Palestinian journalists’ role and efforts in
revealing Israeli violations against Palestinian civilians and
journalists.  Sourani called for
continuing the documentation of violations committed against the freedom of
press. He recommended supporting Palestinian journalists in light of the serious
challenges they face and the limited support they receive.

 

Sourani participated in the ceremony honoring
31 Palestinian journalists from various cities, who obtained international,
Arab and Palestinian awards in 2013.

 

On behalf of Gaza Centre, Dr. Faisal Abu
Shahla, a PLC member, handed Mr. Raji Sourani an appreciation emblem and a gold
medal honoring his efforts in supporting the freedom of press and for winning
the “Alternative Noble Prize”.
