Upon an invitation from the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR), lawyer Iyad al-Alami, Director of the Legal Aid Unit at the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), participated in the ECCHR’s Annual Alumni Meeting held in Berlin-Germany from 05 to 07 November 2015.
During the Alumni Meeting, lawyer al-Alami participated in a panel titled “From Local to Global in International Casework – Understanding Regional Perspectives in the Use of Human Rights”, during which he displayed PCHR’s experience in building legal files and the documentation of Israeli crimes against the Palestinian civilians. He also addressed PCHR’s efforts exerted under Bertha Foundation-funded program to build the capacity of fresh lawyers in order to confront human rights violations with the tools of the international humanitarian and criminal laws.
The panel was also attended by Ms. Alejandra Ancheita, Founder and Executive Director of the Project of Economic, Cultural, and Social Rights (ProDESC) from Mexico; Harry Roque, Chairperson of the Center for International Law (CenterLaw) from the Philippines; Kranti L C, Executive Director of the Human Right Law Network (HRLN) from India; and Miriam Saage-Maab, ECCHR Vice Legal Director. Each one of them talked about his practical experiences.
It should be noted that lawyer Mohammed al-Alami from PCHR’s Legal Aid Unit participated last year in the Alumni Meeting as he received 3-month training at ECCHR. The Meeting was then attended by over 60 lawyers from around the world and was widely covered by media.
On the sidelines of the Meeting ,lawyer al-Alami met with Mr. Andreas Schuller, ECCHR’s Legal Advisor, to discuss the lawsuits filed before the competent German authorities. He also held another meeting with Mr. Gonzalo Boye, Spanish lawyer, to discuss the lawsuits filed before the Spanish Courts.
It is worth noting that ECCHR is an independent, non-governmental, legal and educational organization founded in 2007 by a group of lawyers to protect human rights around the world.
