For the last 3 years, Yousef Shaath has been the Cash Crops Project Manager for the Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC) in Gaza City.  This particular project has been operating since 2006, just before the closure of the Gaza Strip: “The Cash Crops Project helps farmers by supplying them with inputs for their crops, providing necessary training to properly grow the crops, capacity building to help them succeed and, finally, marketing assistance to get the products outside of Gaza.”

Yousef Shaheen (34) owns a wheat farm in Abasan Village, east of Khan Younis.  On Friday, 1 June 2012, at around 6:30 in the morning, Yousef got a phone call from a friend saying that part of his wheat farm had caught fire after one of Israel’s apache’s had fired at the land: “I rushed to the farm and found Israeli tanks on site, so I could not do anything about it.”

Khamis Zakout, with the numerous medals he has won throughout his career as a wheelchair athlete.


 Khamis Zakout (47) lives in Khan Younis with his wife and their 9 children.  His legs were paralysed after being injured in 1992, while working on a construction project in Israel.  To prove to himself that he could still succeed, he decided to engage in sports for disabled persons.  He has since become an Olympic level Palestinian wheelchair athlete, and earned a spot on the para-Olympic team for 2012.
