On Tuesday, 26 December 2017, a young men was killed after being hit with a live bullet during a family dispute, in which firearms were used, in Gaza City. This incident is part of the state of proliferation of weapons and attack on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).
According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 00:20 on Tuesday, 26 December 2017, a family dispute erupted between 2 families, in which firearms and sharp tools were used, on al-Nazzaz Street in al-Sheja’eya neighborhood, east of Gaza City. As a result, ‘Odai Abed al-Raheem Deeb Abu Baid (19), was killed after being hit with a live bullet to the abdomen. Moreover, Mohamed Naser Deeb Abu Baid (36) sustained wounds due to being hit with a sharp tool to the face, while Khalil Khalid Khalil Salouha (53) sustained wounds due to being hit with a sharp tool to the head.
Palestinian police said to PCHR’s fieldworker that the police headed to the scene and arrested members from the 2 families. The police added that the dispute between the 2 families is old and then renewed, in which firearms were used.
The Forensic Medicine Department at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, stated that Abu Baid died after being hit with a live bullet to the abdomen. As a result, he was immediately killed.
PCHR condemns the killing of Abu Baid and calls upon the Attorney General to open a serious investigation into the incident and publish the results on public. PCHR is deeply concerned over the increasing number of victims due to using firearms. PCHR calls also upon the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to stop this phenomenon and maintain the civilians’ security and safety.
